Square Tails

Yesterday I decided to go for beauty over size. I took my little fiberglass rod out of it’s case, and drove up to the northern part of the park to fish for little brook trout. These fish have a great big mushy spot in my heart, they’re usually fairly small (although there are exceptions), outstandingly beautiful, and they seem to have a nearly suicidal urge to enthusiastically eat largish dry flies.

I spent the first part of my afternoon fishing the Gardner River, then I headed back down towards Norris Junction, and fished in the wide open meadows there. The banks were lined with willows, and the stream, all of twelve feet wide had some large pools where you could have sunk a car. This was stealthy fishing, and I spent most of the time crawling around on my hands and knees. It’s amazing what these little fish can make a grown man do, especially a grown man with no interest in eating them.
